The municipality of Marpingen was already settled in Celtic and Roman times. Alsweiler, a district of the municipality, was first mentioned in a document from the 11th century. Today, Marpingen is known as a pilgrimage site and is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. In July 1876, Marpingen achieved its first nationwide peak when the Mother of Jesus is said to have appeared to three young girls in the Härtelwald forest. Härtelwald Chapel, the Stations of the Cross and the spring, with its Marian Worship Site, are places of refuge and tranquillity.
For the active, Marpingen offers attractive cycling and hiking trails, including the premium hiking trail "Biberpfad" and the "Marienrundweg", which is one of the four pilgrim trails in Sankt Wendel County. The Saar-Oster-Höhen-Radweg and Saar-Nahe-Höhen-Radweg cycling paths connect Marpingen to the Saarland cycle network, which also has many additional local routes. Regional hiking trails, such as “Panoramaweg Sankt Wendeler Land” panorama trail, also lead through the municipality. Marpingen is known internationally as one of four German gliding centres where national and international gliding championships are held.
