The community of Marpingen was already settled at the times of the Romans and the Celts. Alsweiler, part of the community, was mentioned for the first time in a document dating from the 11th century. Today Marpingen is well known as a place for pilgrims, visited every year by thousands of pilgrims. In July 1876 it reached a Germany-wide high point when the Virgin Mary was said to have appeared to three young girls in the Härtelwald forest. The Härtelwaldkapelle (Härtelwald-chapel), the Stations of the Cross and the well at the site of the adoration of the Virgin Mary are places of asylum and of peace.
For the active, Marpingen offers attractive cycle and walking paths such as the premium trail Biberpfad and the Marienrundweg (St. Mary’s circular trail), which is part of the many pilgrims paths in the region of Sankt Wendel. The Saar-Oster-Höhen cyle path and the Saar-Nahe-Höhen cycle path link Marpingen with the Saarland cycle path network, which is supplemented by local paths. But also transregional walking trails such as the panorama trail Sankt Wendeler Land lead through the community. Marpingen is internationally known as one of four national glider plane centres, where national and international championships are held.
