Hiwwelhaus in Alsweiler

The "Hiwwelhaus" (house on the hill) in Alsweiler is considered to be the oldest farmhouse in this building style preserved in its originality in the Saarland. Built in 1711/1712 in the centre of the village next to the parish church, this house in south-west German detached style, which housed all living and working quarters under one roof, is characteristic of 17th and 18th century farmhouse culture in the Lorraine region. The outer walls of the living area were built from solid sandstone while the stable and barn are half-timbered structures. This cultural gem, today one of the tourist landmarks in the municipality of Marpingen, functions as a museum in the lovingly renovated living area, and as a cultural centre in the modern event room.
