Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park
Nature, with history!
The Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park is wild, idyllic and simply beautiful - and rich in history, treasures and adventures at the same time. While wildcats feels at home here today, in the past Celts and Romans lived here and have left their mark.
Embedded in Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, it creates a fascinating wilderness in the middle of the old cultural landscape between Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. Ancient, expansive beech forests, the Rosselhalde nature reserve and rare hill swamps, the origins of which are closely linked to the geology of Hunsrück, make Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park unique. It is the youngest National Park in Germany. A primeval forest of tomorrow is gradually developing over an area of 100 km². The area is already home to a unique flora and fauna and an excellent breeding ground for biodiversity. The forests are home to black storks, bats and woodpeckers and the largest wildcat population in Central Europe. That’s why the Wildfreigehege Wildenburg wildlife enclosure contains a wildcat centre with a rescue and release station. Set out on a tour of discovery, accompany a ranger or book your own national park guide and be inspired by the diversity and beauty of this area.
This open landscape with its rolling hills, forests and fields located between Lake Bostalsee, Idar-Oberstein, Wildenburg and Erbeskopf mountain (which, at 816 m, is not only the highest point west of the Rhine, but in the whole of the Benelux) also offers unique natural experiences throughout the entire national park region. The Celtic Ring Wall of Otzenhausen is the most impressive ring wall in the whole of Europe from this era and without question the cultural highlight of the national park. The gemstones from Idar-Oberstein are known all over the world. And there is so much more to discover: excellent premium hiking trails, guided tours through the national park, diverse bike routes, MTB trails and lots of swimming fun, museums and markets...
