




Sanguine, in the mid-15th century was already the preferred drawing material and was rediscovered for artistic purposes in recent years. In the Region of Sankt Wendel sanguine was mined in the triangle Schaumberg, Hofeld-Mauschbach and particularly in Oberthal in the Middle Ages in many places. Sanguine is an ironstone clay, which was deposited during the Permian about 250 million years ago. Only three references to this stone are known throughout the world. It occurs as nodes and was removed in surface mining. Mining occurred mainly in Winter, in Summer the families with their children and in donkey carts took to the road and sold the stone.
