In the Region of Sankt Wendel sanguine was mined in the triangle Schaumberg, Hofeld-Mauschbach and particularly in Oberthal in the Middle Ages in many places. Sanguine is an ironstone clay, which was deposited during the Permian about 250 million years ago. Only three references to this stone are known throughout the world.
