Here it is simply fun to cycle! Although in our hilly countryside it is not always without a bit of effort - a well signposted cycle path network, routing off the roads, and with many connections and possibilities to take a short cut, ensure cycling is pure fun.
You are looking for a family-friendly tour on flat ground? Or much rather a more challenging day tour with a few stretches with steep inclines and descents? Are you a mountain biker and keen to test your stamina on circular tours where top professionals like Mike Kluge, Sabine Spitz and Hanka Kupfernagel have gained their world champion titles? Then you are perfectly placed in the region of Sankt Wendel
In our list of accommodation you will find our selection for cyclists - suited Bed- and Bike-facilities, one of which is our 5-Star campsite Bostalsee.
The tight network of 300 kilometres allows for individual tour planning and route combination depending on your condition and the available time.
The signposting in the region of Sankt Wendel and the entire Saarland is consistent, so there are no problems with orientation. Along the stretches information boards are provided, which provide you information about the surrounding area and height profile of the next stretches.
In the region of Sankt Wendel you can try a new kind of biking experience. With a eVelo, a bike with a soundless electric motor, you can easily reach the heights of the Saarland. The electric motor will multiply the power of your muscles, it is individually adjustable to your fitness level. The four rental stations in our region are part of a network of rental stations and battery changing facilities all throughout the region.
There are completely signposted circular paths such as the Weiselberg or the Schaumberg cycle path, which are signposted as such. Furthermore, there are many connecting paths, which are signposted with the location names. This way the tour can be lengthened or shortened even during the tour.
Connections to the cross-regional cycle paths in the Saarland and Rheinland-Pfalz, as well as the many possibilities for combination, allow for a large range of activity. In this way, connections to the Saarland cycle path lead around the Saarland on a total path length of 362 km. Using this path you can arrive at the Saarschleife (meander of the river Saar) in Mettlach. The Nahe cycle path brings you from the Nahe well into the gem and jewel town of Idar-Oberstein or, if you have enough breath for 127 km (79 mls) into Bingen. From the region of Sankt Wendel you can reach the World Heritage Site Hütte (ironworks) in Völklingen, via the Saar-Oster-Höhen and the Köllertal cycle path. The Saar cycle path brings you from Hütte (ironworks) into the Vauban-city Saarlouis with its French flair.
If you don’t want to bring your own bike, you can hire good quality mountain bikes, trekking or touring bikes for adults and children.
As from 1st of June the northern region of the Saarland offers a new transport facility for cyclists and their bikes.
The new bus number R230 offers a connection between Merzig and St. Wendel via the three big lakes of the Saarland: catchment lakes Losheim and Nonnweiler and lake Bostalsee. Until 3 October the bus is on its way on Saturdys, Sundays and German bank holidays.
The bus offers you the possibility to easily reach the heights of northern Saarland as well as the interesting leisure centres of the region. This leads to a wide range of possible trips throughout the region, depending on your fitness level and your interest.
At Tourist-Information Sankt Wendeler Land we offer different tour proposals (German only) combining biking or hiking and driving by bus.
Have a good trip!
